Sketchbook...

I am now doing sketches in my large journal it's about 11x8, a few months back I said I preferred a smaller 5x5 size, but now I think I like this best. I am so inspired by other people and other styles that it has been an up and down trial of trying to really find what I do like best and what feels like me, so now I am mixing drawing with some doodles and lettering and it feels calming and enjoyable so I will see how it goes. I guess sometimes you have to try out a variety of things but I really just want to find my preferred way of working. Has any one else gone through this or did you have your style pretty well down from the beginning ? Or do you like to constantly try something new and not think about it so much?

    1. Thank you so much, yes I think creating should be about fun, and I may be taking it a little too serious :)
      Have a great week

    1. Hi Cathy, Thank you, mom said you are taking a variety of online classes, sounds so fun,and I love hearing that it is calming that is so important. I think a lot of times I am just so serious about it and should probably not worry about it so much :)

    2. That's right, just let it flow. I do it to de-stress. When I am creating I tend to forget about day to day problems and believe me there are plenty to forget about! hehe Keep up the fabulous work. Are there any supplies that you particularly like or need? Let me know, I might have some extras. Luv ya. Aunt Cathy :0)

    3. Your words made me happy this morning, thank you! I'm glad you have creative projects to help you through stressful times, wish there weren't so many stressful times though :)
If you really don't mind and you have any extras I could always use pink or green markers and colored pencils. your offer is so kind Cathy, I appreciate it :) Love you too

  3. Jenni - Your drawings are fabulous. I am so glad you are sketching and doodling in your journal. I enjoy working in small ones but the large do allow so much nice room to include more. I think your style is just perfect. Have a beautiful day.

    1. Thank you so much Debbie, I do think I like the larger journal more right now, but sometimes I post something, and then I end up changing my mind. I'm trying to just relax and have fun with it though, but sometimes I do take it all too serious and don't like that I bounce back and forth between things. Oh well it is always fun in the process.
Hope you are having a beautiful day too :)

  4. Oh, I SO relate to this post and your question. I'm constantly flitting from one thing to another, copying (boo) other people's style when really I just want to find my own. At last count I had 20 journals on the go, different sizes, different papers, different themes. If you have found your niche bravo! Tell us how it happened, please! Lovely pages, by the way. :)

    1. Hi Susan, yes I am the same way, so influenced by others that I am inspired by and not sure what feels most like me, but maybe the thing is to focus on the process of creating and just have fun with it. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, I was so curious how it is for others, and we all seem to be in the same place with it, I'm just trying to pay attention to which styles make me happiest and focus on those, but I think it is just all part of the process. :)

    2. Good idea. I'll try to pay attention to what makes me happiest. Part of my discomfort is that I'd love to have one journal to have a kind of "documented life", but I can't decide on a size and paper type because of the various kinds of art I'm inspired to do. Maybe I'll figure it all out one day....

  5. I'm so pleased that I've just found you from Monique .... La Table de Nana..
After reading your post I now feel much happier, knowing that so many other watercolour painters feel the same way as I do, about choosing or finding their own style. I see so many & copy them, wishing I could paint like them, instead of realising what I'm good at & concentrating on my own style. Thank you so much Jenni for putting into words on your post what I'm thinking about everyday.

  6. Beautiful! I was wondering if you've had formal training or if you were just born that talented?

    1. Thank you so much! I've never had formal training but I've been doing some kind of painting or drawing for about 18 years now, so it's just been a lot of practice :) Thanks for the compliment :)

  7. It's called, "Finding your voice" - very common. There is a book, "An Artist's Way of Seeing" by Mary Whyte that discusses finding your way. See if your library has it. I think you will enjoy it. Love your work!
